Infectious diseases affecting fertility

Infectious diseases affecting fertility

  • Canine herpes virus: Identified in 53% of Gauteng breeding kennels in a recent survey, this virus is often present without the breeder even being aware of it. It causes fading puppies and can cause abortions and stillbirths. A blood test is available, but affected animals often have telltale lesions in the vagina. A vaccine is available and should be used in pregnant bitches to safeguard the litter wherever exposure is suspected. Transmission is by direct contact between animals. Venereal transmission is possible, prompting the widespread use of artificial insemination in some countries.
  • Canine Brucellosis: Rare in South Africa, this disease affects fertility of both dog and bitch. It is primarily of importance as a disease which should be tested for when dogs are imported.
