Pete Irons

Pete Irons was born in Maseru, Lesotho. After his schooling in Vereeniging, Edenvale and Springs, he went to the University of Pretoria and obtained the Batchelor of Veterinary Science in 1987. He then did an internship in Rural Animal Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, USA, followed by national service as lecturer at the University of Bophuthatswana's School of Agriculture. After practicing for three years in the UK, during which he obtained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' Certificate of Cattle Health and Production, he returned to South Africa in 1993. Since January 1994 he has been lecturing at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, and training and working as a specialist in veterinary reproduction together with well-known specialists Johan Nöthling, Dietrich Volkmann, Henk Bertschinger, David Gerber, Johan Terblanche and Martin Schulman.

He passed the American College of Theriogenologists' certifying examination in 1998, and obtained his MMedVet(Gyn) in 2002 and his PhD from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 2008. He has written three book chapters, published a number of research articles in international journals, presented at many international congresses, and locally has written and presented widely for both lay and professional groups.

Pete is married to Brigitte Wenhold, a veterinary practitioner and practice owner, and they have three children. He is a registered beagle breeder, an avid birder, and past-chairman of the Seringveld Conservancy, where he is resident.
