Artificial insemination may be considered when natural mating is not possible due to physical inability, abnormal behaviour, poor libido of the male, or due to the dog and bitch being in different places. It may also reduce the risk of infections being transmitted during mating.
Insemination using fresh semen is the simplest and most commonly done. The dog should be examined thoroughly and a semen sample collected and evaluated before the bitch is ready for mating. This will enable another male to be located should the first choice male not be fully fertile.
Chilled, extended semen may also be inseminated into the vagina.
The bitch should be examined from 5 days after first showing signs of heat (swelling of the vulva and / or bloody discharge) every 2 to 3 days until the ideal time for insemination is identified. From then on, she is inseminated every 2 days until her season ends (when 'diestrus' begins), usually two or three inseminations.
